"THE WORLD IN A BLINK OF AN EYE"

Pika - 7 Photos

Rocky Mountains, Alberta

All the obvious reasons aside why photographing wildlife can be astounding and at times astonishing, one of the more subtle factors is the close-ups & detail you can achieve through the camera and developing of photos that can be missed through the naked eye or even a pair of binoculars.

A "still" photograph can provide an insight into the natural world that would probably be missed. Macro photography takes this to a much higher level but even with a telephoto lens, Nature can disclose secrets.

Pikas who, of course, are related to rabbits have to be, I think, one of the most adorable little mammals & extremely photogenic, sounding their little warning "eeps" as they traverse rocky terrain at speed gathering flowers & hay for their nests.

Fortunately, the two days these photographs were taken, there were intervals where the Pikas took "positions" from their scampering either to survey the terrain or take up sentry duty. As Photo #1, is a close-up, you can clearly see the reflection of the mountains and the sky with clouds in the Pika's eyes, particularly the right one (or left in the photograph). In fact, Photo #2 through Photo #5, have similar reflections. The Pika's eyes in Photo #6 & Photo #7 reflect the overhanging rocks under which the Pika has taken cover.

Those reflections are yet another highlight to an extraordinary Pika experience.
