How does a Black-Crowned Night Heron re-position himself/herself on a fir tree?
Well, rather than take-off and fly over & around, probably the most efficient use of energy is just to use the fir tree like a step ladder, one branch at a time, one level at a time, until reaching the most optimal perch.
And from there, the surrounding area can be surveyed for potential food and threat of predators, and can even provide the perfect platform for grooming ........
